We visited both Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland within the same trip, a few days apart, with two kids and the same energy levels. Which means this comparison comes from our back-to-back experience rather than separate visits years apart.

The short answer is: When you compare Hong Kong Vs Shanghai Disneyland, they are very different parks. The better one depends entirely on what you’re looking for. The longer answer is what this post is about.

The Rides: Which Park Wins?

This is the most important question for most visitors and the honest answer is Shanghai wins on headline ride quality, but Hong Kong has things you cannot experience anywhere else too.

Shanghai’s Best Rides

Shanghai Disneyland has three rides that sit among the best Disney has ever built, anywhere:

Zootopia: Hot Pursuit is the most technically advanced trackless ride system in any Disney park. The Zootopia land itself is extraordinary and the ride delivers on all of it. We rode twice, once with an express pass and a second time when the line was short, which meant we got to see the little details all through the line that adds to the story.

TRON Lightcycle Power Run is one of the best coasters we’ve ridden at any Disney park anywhere in the world. A motorcycle-style launch coaster that goes through a digital lightcycle world at speed. It’s low light so you can’t see what’s coming up.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure is not the same ride as the US version. Magnetic boats, enormous IMAX-scale screens and Captain Jack fighting a sea monster. It’s stunning and unlike anything else in the Disney world. This is by far the best Pirates of the Caribbean ride we’ve been on.

Hong Kong’s Best Rides

Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars is one of our all-time favourite Disney rollercoasters at any park, anywhere. It goes for ages, delivers a surprise backwards section and the kind of ride you want to get straight back on. It’s not over in 30 seconds flat either, like Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs.

Mystic Manor doesn’t exist anywhere else. It’s a trackless dark ride through an eccentric explorer’s collection of magical artefacts, created specifically for Hong Kong because the Haunted Mansion’s ghost and death theming doesn’t translate culturally to a Chinese Disney park. It’s an enjoyable ride and quite popular.

The Marvel Content at Hong Kong Disneyland is more extensive than at any Disney park outside of California. Iron Man Experience is exclusive to Hong Kong. For Marvel fans specifically, it’s a must. Especially with an expansion on their Marvel offerings coming in 2027.

Verdict on Rides

Shanghai wins on sheer ride quality if you’re comparing peak-to-peak. But Hong Kong has Mystic Manor (unique to this park, world-class), Big Grizzly (one of the best Disney coasters ever) and the best Marvel content in Asia. Don’t make the mistake of writing Hong Kong off as the lesser park on rides.

Size and Scale: How Do They Feel?

Shanghai is enormous. It’s the largest Disney park outside the United States and the largest Disneyland style park anywhere. To cover it properly, you could likely fill 2 full days. The scale of everything – the castle, the lands, the crowds, is staggering when you arrive.

It also has the largest Disney castle in the world! And it’s beautiful.

We did 37 thousand steps in the one day we spent at Shanghai Disneyland which is pretty crazy! Plus we had Disney Premier Access passes to skip lines on popular rides.

Hong Kong is significantly smaller, covers eight themed lands comfortably in a single day and feels far more manageable. It is also less crowded.

We visited Shanghai first and Hong Kong a few days later. Walking into Hong Kong Disneyland after Shanghai felt like a relief.

Not because Hong Kong is worse, but because the human scale of it is easier to navigate, less overwhelming and a more relaxed day.

If you’re doing both on the same trip, or visiting all 4 Asia Disney Parks in a single trip, consider doing Hong Kong last, since by the end of a mega Disney trip, you tend to be running out of steam a big and it can be a nice, relaxed winddown.

Crowds and Queuing

Shanghai is significantly busier. Queues for the headline rides regularly hit 90 to 120 minutes or more on a busy day.

Disney Premier Access (DPA)passes are practically essential for a one-day visit. The crowds at peak times can be overwhelming, particularly in summer.

There is no way we would have visited without DPA passes, simply because our time is valuable when you only have a single day to make the most of it!

Hong Kong is busy, but noticeably more manageable.

On quieter weekdays you can cover the park at a comfortable pace without needing priority passes, though DPA is still worth considering for Big Grizzly and World of Frozen at busy times.

We had DPA’s for both parks and while we could have saved the money at Hong Kong, instead we got to ride our favourites twice and enjoy a show as well.

One difference worth knowing before you go: the queuing culture at Shanghai reflects mainland China norms. People push into lines, gaps get filled, and it happens with no apparent awareness that this might be considered rude.

It’s not aggressive, it’s cultural, but it can be frustrating if you’re not expecting it. We saw families with young children step directly in front of us in queues multiple times at Shanghai Disneyland.

Hong Kong’s crowd culture is noticeably closer to what most Western visitors are used to.

Language and Accessibility

This is one of Hong Kong’s clearest advantages.

Hong Kong Disneyland has English signage throughout, English audio on all rides and strong English from cast members across the whole park.

It’s the most accessible of all the Asian Disney parks for English speakers and a great first Asian Disney visit for families who are nervous about navigating a language barrier.

We worried about this when we visited Tokyo Disneyland Resort prior to this trip.

Because it was in English, we watched the Lion King stage show at HK Disneyland but skipped live shows at Shanghai.

While most rides are just as enjoyable even without being in English, certain rides, like Jungle Cruise at Tokyo, were lost in translation since we didn’t understand the jokes. Hong Kong Disneyland has Jungle Cruise queues for both English and Chinese speakers.

Shanghai Disneyland has bilingual signage and the official app is available in English, which helps a lot in the park. However, the rides are predominately in Chinese, with some announcements in English.

Staff have some English, but not as strong as they do in Hong Kong.

Which Park Is Better For You?

If you have young kids (under 8):

Hong Kong. The smaller size is more manageable with younger children. The World of Frozen is designed for all ages and kids will love feeling like they just stepped into Arendelle. The overall atmosphere is less overwhelming than Shanghai. The English-language accessibility also removes a layer of parental stress.

If you have teenagers:

Both, but Shanghai might have more. TRON, Zootopia: Hot Pursuit and Pirates are the kind of world-class rides that hold up for older kids completely. Hong Kong works well for teenagers too, particularly with the Marvel content and Big Grizzly. They are pretty equal on thrill rides, although once the new Spider-Man coaster opens at Shanghai, that will change things.

If you want big thrills:

Shanghai is currently a little ahead on the thrill rides with more to come. TRON is definitely a bigger thrill than Hyperspace Mountain. Roaring Rapids, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Rex’s Racer (don’t underestimate this one) and the upcoming Spider-Man rollercoaster.

If you’re primarily a Marvel fan:

Hong Kong. It currently has more Marvel content than any Disney park outside California. The Iron Man Experience is exclusive to Hong Kong, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle is here, and the whole Tomorrowland area has a Marvel flavour you won’t find at Shanghai. The expanded Marvel zone coming in 2027 will only strengthen this. There will be a Tower of Terror/Guardians of the Galaxy-style Avengers ride coming. However, Shanghai is also getting a new Marvel-themed land and ride by 2028.

If you’re a Disney purist who wants the most unique experiences:

Hong Kong. From a sheer Disney achievement standpoint, Shanghai is the more ambitious park, but if it’s that classic Disneyland experience you’re looking for, Hong Kong has It’s a Small World, Jungle River Cruise, Disneyland Railroad, Adventures of Winnie The Pooh, and Dumbo The Flying Elephant.

If you only have one day and one park:

This depends on your family. If you want accessibility, manageability and a great day without needing to plan military-level logistics, choose Hong Kong. If you want the most technically impressive Disney park in Asia and you’re willing to do the planning and manage the crowds, choose Shanghai.

Cost Comparison

Both parks have tiered ticket pricing based on date, with busier days costing more than quieter ones.

Hong Kong tickets start from around HK$639 for adults on standard days. Disney Premier Access passes are purchased individually or available in pre-set bundles of 3, 6 or 8 attractions, and you can’t choose which rides are in the bundle.

Shanghai tickets vary more significantly by season and date. Disney Premier Access is also paid only, with no free tier at either park. These come in set bundles or can be purchased individually.

Both parks were similar on pricing overall based on total cost of tickets, Disney Premier Access bundles and early entry passes. Food and drink inside the park was equally expensive, as was merchandise.

Location-wise, both are located relatively close to the nearest airports. Both have Disney hotels on site if you want to stay close to the action, and neither has a lot of other options for accommodation really close by.

It is very easy to get to Hong Kong Disneyland by public transport. A little more complicated for Shanghai, but rideshare is more affordable.

Hong Kong Disneyland also has no Disney Town, nor are there any supermarkets or dining options nearby outside of the park or resorts. This is an added cost, dining either in the resort if you stay at one or in the park.

Shanghai has many restaurants and shops just outside their park gates.

Getting There

Hong Kong Disneyland is on Lantau Island and easily reached by the MTR Tung Chung Line to Sunny Bay, then transfer to the Disneyland Resort Line. Around 40 minutes from Central Hong Kong.

Shanghai Disneyland is in the Pudong district of Shanghai. Take Metro Line 11 to Disney Resort Station, around 40-50 minutes from central Shanghai. Or use Didi (China’s ride-hailing app), which is quite affordable.

Hong Kong Disneyland Hotels (3 available)

Hong Kong has three hotels at different price points, which gives families real choice. There is a free shuttle bus service connecting the hotels to the park, running throughout the day.

Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is the upscale option — Victorian-inspired, sea views, the premium experience.

Disney’s Explorer Lodge sits in the middle, with an adventure and exploration theme across four distinct gardens.

Shanghai Disneyland Hotels

Shanghai currently has two hotels connected to the park by shuttle.

Shanghai Disneyland Hotel is the premium Victorian-inspired option.

Toy Story Hotel is the fun family pick, fully themed throughout. We stayed at the equivalent Tokyo Toy Story Hotel version and loved it.

Two more hotels are coming. Disney Enchanted Star Hotel opens winter 2027 — 400 rooms, Art Nouveau architecture on Wishing Star Lake. A fourth hotel adjacent to the park entrance has also been announced, with no confirmed opening date yet.

Which Wins?

Right now, Hong Kong has the better variety of options across different budgets. Shanghai’s four-hotel lineup from 2027 onwards will change that, and the Enchanted Star Hotel in particular looks worth watching. But realistically, you cant go wrong either way.

Staying on site at a Disney Resort hotel is a splurge, but it is also convenient since most of the Asia Disney Parks aren’t close to a lot of other accommodation and it means no long commute after a huge day in the parks.

Should You Do Both?

If you’re building a Disney Asia trip, yes. They’re different enough that doing both doesn’t feel repetitive at all. The lands are different, the rides are different and the atmosphere is completely different.

Our suggestion on order: Shanghai first, then Hong Kong.

That way you experience the scale and spectacle of Shanghai when you have the most energy, and Hong Kong’s more relaxed, manageable scale feels like a nice wind-down rather than a step down.

Combining both parks with Tokyo Disney across a longer Asia trip is the full Disney Asia experience and each park contributes something the others don’t.

And if you’ve got a goal as I do of visiting every single Disney Park in the world, then you totally need to visit both!

Our Verdict: Shanghai Disney Vs Hong Kong Disney

Okay, so we love both Hong Kong and Shanghai Disneyland and we are so grateful to have visited both.

For ride quality and sheer ambition: Shanghai wins.

For accessibility, Marvel content and a great day without the stress: Hong Kong wins.

If we had to pick one, it would depend on the trip. Shanghai Disneyland is one of the most impressive theme parks we’ve visited anywhere in the world, and Zootopia Land, TRON and Pirates make it worth the logistics.

But Hong Kong Disneyland is the park we would recommend to most families planning their first Asian Disney experience, or to any family who wants a brilliant day without the scale and crowd management of Shanghai.

You don’t have to worry about the language barrier in Hong Kong since English is most widely spoken on rides and during shows.

The ideal, if your itinerary allows it, is both. Better still, throw in a Japan trip and visit both Tokyo parks too…
