This 3-day Lake Tekapo itinerary is the perfect mix of relaxed time mixed with sightseeing and some unique Lake Tekpao experiences that make this small town in New Zealand’s South Island well worth a visit.

We first visited Lake Tekapo during our 2019 South Island road trip and I instantly fell in love with it. Visiting 7 years later, I can still confirm, it is my favourite place on earth… so far!

Lake Tekapo 3-Day Itinerary

This is our 3 days in Lake Tekapo itinerary, with a couple of minor tweaks to suit your first-time visit. You can use this itinerary as is, or adapt it to create your own perfect trip!

Lake Tekapo is a small town. It’s not the place you go for thrills. Try our Queenstown itinerary for that. But it is a place where you can go and really appreciate the natural beauty of one of New Zealand’s lesser-known gems.

It has its own unique things to do in Lake Tekapo, but it’s absolutely a place to slow down and appreciate nature.

Day 1 โ€“ Arrival & Lake Walk

Afternoon:

church of the good shepperd lake tekapo.
  • Arrive in Lake Tekapo and check into your accommodation.
  • If it’s early enough, grab fish and chips from The Better Batter NZ and sit by the water to eat.
  • Stroll along the lakefront and practice skipping rocks, or let the kids enjoy the waterfront playground with the dual flying fox.
  • Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd for that iconic Tekapo sunset photo and see the dog statue.

Evening:

  • Grab dinner at TLV Restaurant & Bar or Blue Lake Eatery & Bar.
  • Optional: If skies are clear, join a stargazing tour with Dark Sky Project โ€” Tekapo is part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve. This is one of the most popular things to do here!

Day 2 โ€“ Tekapo Springs & Lakeside Relaxation

Morning:

view of lake tekapo from mount john observatory.
  • Head up the short, scenic drive (or hike if you’re feeling energetic) to Mt John Observatory. It’s $14 per car to access the road, payable by card only.
  • Alternatively, hike up to Mt John instead via Mount John Walkway.
  • Enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Tekapoโ€™s vivid turquoise waters, Lake Pukaki and the Southern Alps backdrop with lupins blooming in Summer.
  • Visit the Astro Cafรฉ โ€“ one of the most scenic cafรฉs in New Zealand. Enjoy coffee and cake with panoramic mountain views.

Afternoon:

tekapo hot springs.
  • Head to Tekapo Springs: relax in the hot pools while kids enjoy the aqua play area or try the waterslide. Even the kids’ pool is heated, thankfully!
  • Have lunch at the Tekapo Springs cafรฉ or a lakeside picnic (you can come and go when you like with an all-day springs pass.
  • If youโ€™re feeling active, rent tubes or ice-skates (in winter) at Tekapo Springs or play a round of mini golf during the summer.

Evening:

  • Dinner at one of the restaurants in town or cook back at your accommodation

For something unique, combine the Tekapo hot springs with stargazing for a 1.5 hour hot pools stargazing experience. We didn’t get to do this but it would have been a cool experience.

Day 3 โ€“ Aoraki / Mount Cook Day Trip

Morning:

mount cook view on scenic drive.
  • Depart early (around 8 AM) for Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park (approx. 1.5 hr drive each way).
  • Stop at Lake Pukaki viewpoint โ€” the turquoise water and Mt Cook backdrop make for stunning family photos.
  • Once in the national park, visit:
    • Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre (great for kids)
    • Hooker Valley Track โ€“ a flat, family-friendly 10km return walk with swing bridges and glacier views (budget ~3 hours).
    • For a shorter option: Tasman Glacier View Track (~30 min climb with amazing rewards). We did this one and also the Blue Pools loop, which is halfway to the Tasman Glacier viewpoint.

Mt Cook Day Tour: Alternatively, take a Tekapo to Mt Cook day tour and see the best of the area without missing any of the good stuff.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch at The Hermitage Hotel Cafรฉ or bring a picnic to enjoy at the park.
  • Explore Mount Cook Village before driving back to Tekapo in the late afternoon.

Evening:

champagne at dark sky cafe in lake tekapo.
New Year’s Eve bubbles
  • Have a drink at Dark Sky Diner
  • Enjoy a casual dinner in Tekapo and spend your final peaceful night overlooking the lake.

Alternative itinerary: If you’re not keen on the Mt Cook day trip, there are plenty of great hiking trails around Lake Tekapo or drive to nearby Lake Pukaki and visit the salmon shop. There is also a petting zoo in Lake Tekapo to meet cute farm animals.

If you are coming from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo, check out this alternate route between Christchurch and Lake Tekapo. It’s a gravel road but with epic views!

Where To Stay In Lake Tekapo

lake tekapo mantra apartments.

We spent 3 nights at Mantra Lake Tekapo in a 3-bedroom apartment, mostly because it was over the New Year’s Eve period and that was all we had left, but it was a good location, fully self-contained and perfect for families or groups.

Each of the apartments are 2 storey townhouses, fully equipped with everything you need for your stay, even a cozy fireplace and a private backyard.

We actually loved these apartments. It was over the New Year’s period, though and the cleaners forgot to replace a few things in our room – trash bags, dishwashing tablets, but a minor issue that was easily resolved.

Lake Tekapo Travel Tips

lake tekapo.
  • Driving: The drive from Tekapo to Mt Cook is one of NZโ€™s most scenicโ€”plan photo stops along the way. Same with driving between Lake Tekapo and Queenstown.
  • Packing: Bring layers โ€” the weather can shift quickly, even in summer, since you’re amongst the mountains.
  • Kid-friendly stargazing: If joining a guided session, choose an early one (8โ€“9 PM) so the kids donโ€™t get too tired or do the recorded screening alternative instead – a perfect all-weather option.
  • Meals: There aren’t a lot of restaurants and cafes in Tekapo and they can be on the pricy side, so staying somewhere self-contained can be a good option, and popping over to FourSquare Supermarket to get some meals to cook.

Consider extending your stay to Wanaka, Christchurch, or Queenstown next.
