Long weekends are the perfect time for a mini break escape with the family. For our most recent long weekend, we spent it holidaying with a group of friends at the Gold Coast, at San Simeon Tugun.
As the name suggests, San Simeon Absolute Beachfront Apartments is right on the beach and a perfect location for a family getaway! And spending it with some of our closest friends made it even better!
The weather was not perfect over the long weekend, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying those beachfront views and getting outdoors for some fun and games.

SAN SIMEON BEACHFRONT APARTMENTS
Beachfront apartments on the Gold Coast are a popular choice since the Gold Coast has some of the best beaches in the world! That’s what we think, anyway!
However the view usually comes a higher price tag for accommodation and it is not always in budget for many families planning a beach holiday. Especially over a long weekend, when the prices are always elevated!
Thankfully this was not the case with San Simeon Tugun! They are moderately priced and worth it for the included amenities. Best of all, this accommodation could not be more perfect for travelling with kids. The apartments are huge!
Gold Coast Beachfront Accommodation
The San Simeon backs onto Tugun beach at the Gold Coast and the beach is easily accessible via a walkway. There are no gates or fences between you and the beach. Just a green lawn and some picnic tables to enjoy the view from outdoors.
When you’re travelling with kids and wanting to duck down to the beach, the less things between you and the beach, the better. It means less juggling kids, towels, beach toys and more on your way down to the water!
In saying that though, they have key entry gates so kids can’t run off on their own without your approval… unless you are staying in one of the ground level apartments!
Every apartment also has ocean views from their large deck areas, so you can enjoy the view without having to leave your accommodation!
Large Family Sized Apartments
The stand out for San Simeon Gold Coast is the size of the apartments. Each family apartment is huge! We stayed in a 2 bedroom standard apartment, in the left tower.
Our friends were all located in the right tower. Thankfully it was an easy walk down to the car park and back up the lift to switch towers. It also meant we had the chance to check out a few of the other apartments too and see that all the family apartments were equally large, with some slight differences to the design.
The 2 bedroom apartments have a main bedroom with queen size bed and a second bedroom with 2 single beds. Our main bedroom opened up onto our balcony for ocean views, with a second sliding door.
There is a full kitchen in each apartment. Not a kitchenette. I love this for longer stay trips, and especially when travelling with kids. It means you can keep the costs down by cooking some of your own meals. We loaded up our fridge with breakfast and snack foods when we arrived, and maybe a few sneaky adult beverages.
The self-contained apartments have a main bathroom, a separate toilet, and an ensuite bathroom off the main bedroom.
You can check out the room layout of our apartment in the diagram below:
Some units did not have bathtubs. Ours did, while our friend’s room did not, so if you are staying with really young children, you may want to request a bathtub for your room.
The rooms have large family sized dining tables to seat 6, a couch and extra chairs, as well as 2 chairs and a small table on the deck. There was so much seating.
This made it perfect for holidaying with friends as it was grand final footy weekend and our room became the hub of activity for the men and their sport viewing! Plenty of chairs for everyone. And room for the kids to move about and play too.
There are several room types available at the San Simeon Gold Coast apartments, including one and two bedroom standard and superior rooms and ground level two bedroom apartments.
San Simeon Tugun Amenities
The San Simeon Tugun apartments are run like a holiday home rather than a resort style setting. You are left to enjoy your time without the interruptions of daily room servicing or staff around every corner.
The reception area is attended during limited hours, however they do set up out of hour key access for arrival outside of those times. They are contactable if needed outside of those times.
There is a large outdoor pool for guests to use while staying at San Simeon. You require your room key to open the gate, since there is no actual fence separating the apartments from the beachfront. This reduces the chances of random people passing by joining you for a dip! HA
There is a heated spa also which is a good size to fit several people. Trust me, half of us adults were in there along with half the kids at one point, since the pool itself was freezing during our early Spring stay.
There are sun lounges around the side of the pool and some umbrellas set up for shade.
There is also a rooftop adults only pool and sauna area. At the time of our stay this area was undergoing maintenance and upgrade so we did not have the chance to see it.
There is a BBQ area with a cover over the top behind the pool area. Lucky because it started raining on the night of our beachfront BBQ!
Several picnic tables are set up both under cover near the BBQs and on the lawn nearby, giving you plenty of areas to eat outdoors.
The kitchen in the apartment is well stocked with all the tools and accessories you need for your BBQ. This is an awesome bonus, being a self-contained apartment!
There is a games room underneath the pool area with a soccer table and a ping pong table. The balls were missing when we were there so you may need to ask reception for these, or perhaps they have a habit of disappearing! If you have your own ping pong gear at home, bring it along!
There is a secure undercover garage with key access underneath the apartments, with one car park included in your room rate.
Some of the car parks are quite tricky to maneuver out of though, as is often the case for compact apartment car parks. But it’s great knowing there is a secure place to keep your car if you are driving during your Gold Coast holiday.
There is a full size tennis court available for guest recreation use during their stay. This can be a great fun family activity during your break, although we did not have a chance to play due to the rain on and off over the weekend.
While the room is advertised as having free wifi, and it did indeed come with an access code for limited data use during the stay, it is a tiny amount and as someone who works predominantly online and with a husband who loves social media too much, it barely lasted the first night. It also dropped out constantly from the moment we connected so don’t come expecting great free wifi! You’ve been warned! Lucky you don’t travel to surf the net… right?!
Location & Local Attractions
San Simeon Beachfront Apartments are located in Tugun on the Gold Coast. It is close to the Coolangatta Airport and easily accessible via the M1 Highway. The address for San Simeon Tugun is 387 Golden Four Drive Tugun, Gold Coast.
The apartments are within easy walking distance to the Tugun Village shopping complex where you will find a supermarket, bottle shop, takeaway and restaurants, some boutique shopping and even a thrift shop! Pretty much all the things you’ll need for a self-contained Gold Coast apartment stay!
You are also in walking distance to the Tugun Surf Club… but DON’T DO IT! We had potentially one of the worst meals ever on our visit. Our friends have previously had reasonable dining experiences there but on our recent visit, it was every degree of bad. Like a garlic bread that seemed to be missing the garlic and seafood that tasted badly defrosted. Not to mention a rubbery overcooked steak. Not a great memory that night!
Gold Coast Attractions
San Simeon is around 20-45 minutes from the Gold Coast theme parks. It is also within easy distance to Surfers Paradise and the central hub of the Gold Coast’s biggest attractions and family friendly activities.
While you have a beautiful beach right in front of you, there are lots of other nearby beaches to explore too and playgrounds for the kids.
Tugun is also conveniently located a relatively short drive from the Tweed Coast if you want to duck over the border and enjoy some of what New South Wales has on offer. It is situated an hour from Byron Bay or Ballina.
SAN SIMEON BEACHFRONT APARTMENTS REVIEW
San Simeon Absolute Beachfront Apartments in Tugun has everything you need for a mini break or an extended stay on the Gold Coast. The apartments are well maintained, despite being a bit older. They have all the comforts you need for longer stays, particularly with the size of the apartments and the fact they are completely self-contained with a full size kitchen and bathrooms.
Check out our quick video tour above for a closer look.
There is the beach view and easy access for a swim or a kick of the footy on the sand. Plus you have the swimming pool and spa facilities at the accommodation too.
While we were disappointed we were unable to use the rooftop pool and sauna during our stay, we would be happy to stay at San Simeon again in future. It was a perfect meeting place to enjoy a family holiday with our friends with kids, without being too far from home.
The only negative was the wifi, but like I said, such a minor issue when you’re on holidays! And a good excuse not to sneak in some work while you’re meant to be relaxing!
